Every year, hundreds of thousands of people travel to San Diego for Comic-Con, one of the largest pop culture conventions in the world. While the event brings excitement, creativity, and tourism to our city, it also brings a darker reality that often goes unnoticed.
During this year’s Comic-Con weekend, a coordinated anti-human trafficking operation conducted by the San Diego Human Trafficking Task Force and multiple law enforcement agencies resulted in the arrest of 27 individuals accused of attempting to purchase sex. More importantly, the operation led to the identification and recovery of nine trafficking victims, including two juveniles. One of those minors, a 16-year-old who had been reported missing, was safely located and connected with support services.
Demand Fuels Exploitation
Human trafficking exists because there is demand.
Large events such as conventions, sporting events, festivals, and concerts can create opportunities for traffickers who seek to profit from vulnerable individuals. Law enforcement agencies across the country have increasingly focused on reducing that demand by targeting those attempting to purchase commercial sex.
California Attorney General Rob Bonta emphasized that solicitation is not a victimless crime. Every attempt to buy another human being contributes to an industry built on coercion, manipulation, and exploitation.
Why This Matters
At Operation Love Global, we believe every person has inherent value and deserves to live free from exploitation.
The victims identified during this operation represent real people—children, teens, and adults—whose lives have been impacted by trafficking. While arrests are an important part of the solution, long-term healing requires comprehensive care, including safe housing, counseling, education, employment opportunities, and community support.
That is why we partner with organizations that provide prevention, intervention, rescue support, and survivor restoration both here in the United States and around the world.
Awareness Creates Action
Many people assume human trafficking happens somewhere else. The reality is that it happens in communities across the United States—including San Diego County.
Learning the warning signs, having conversations with your children, supporting organizations that serve survivors, and reporting suspicious activity all play an important role in preventing exploitation.
When communities become informed, traffickers have fewer places to operate unnoticed.
